Roger Westphal of Waldo, Florida formerly of Fairbank passed away June 25, 2022 at Parkside Assisted Living in Starke, Florida. Roger was born February 17, 1946 in Waterloo the son of Clifford and Pauline (Kleinow) Westphal. He grew up on the family farm located in rural Fairbank. Roger attended elementary school in Fairbank and graduated from Wapsie Valley Community Schools with the class of 1964. After high school Roger enrolled at the DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago where he received his Associates Degree in Applied Science of Electronics Engineering, graduating in 1966. He then moved to California and worked for General Dynamics until 1968. In 1968 Roger enlisted in the United States Navy and served until 1971. During his time in the Navy Roger continued his education focusing on electronics. After his discharge from the Navy he went back to work for General Dynamics and then Lockhheed Aircraft. Roger then settled in Florida and enrolled at the University of Florida where he received his Bachelor and Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. While at the University of Florida Roger worked as an Associate Professor for over 4 years. In 1986 Roger went to work for Gainesville Utilities and remained there until his retirement in 2011. Roger was a lifetime learner and was always intrigued by anything involving electricity. Roger enjoyed genealogy, traveling and sightseeing and whenever possible he would return home for family events including reunions or family picnics. He is survived by two brothers; Kenneth (Marie) Westphal of Fairbank and Lyle (Beth) Westphal of Healy, Alaska one sister, Elizabeth Sickinger of Tempe, Arizona along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Roger was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Nancy Sickinger.

Funeral Services: 10:30 AM Friday July 1, 2022 at the United Methodist Church in Fairbank.

Visitation: 9:30-10:30 AM Friday July 1, 2022 at United Methodist Church.

Interment: Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor, Iowa.

Military Rites: American Legion Post 267 of Marquette, Iowa

Lunch will be served immediately following the service at the church social hall.

Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.

  1. My condolences to the family. I was a classmate of Roger’s at Wapsie Valley. Roger sat behind me in chemistry and physics.

  2. Kenny and Marie, I have seen that Rodger died and know you are going through some hard times. Our prayers are with you and know that in time your wounds will heal. Love and Prayers, Ron and Lois Rider.

  3. Roger and I communicated via email over the years, but we lost touch in recent ones. RIP, Roger.
