Edith Mae Duffy

Fairbank: Edith Mae Duffy, age 96 passed away February 4, 2018 at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein. She was born June 25, 1921 on a farm in rural Buchanan county. She was the daughter of Ira and Ruth (Morarie) Sankey. She started 1st grade at an Amish school and later attended Hazleton Fontana School. From 5th grade to graduation she attended Oran Consolidated School in Oran. On January 31, 1939 she was united in marriage to Robert H. Duffy at Immaculate Conception Church in Fairbank. They lived and farmed in the Fairbank/Oran area where she was a very busy homemaker, helping farm and raise their eight children. Edith and Bob loved to dance, play cards and entertain family and friends. They retired from farming and moved to Fairbank in 1980. Bob preceded her in death on November 24, 1994. After moving to Fairbank, Edith was employed at Covenant Clinic and retired on her 80th birthday after 16 years of service.  Edith served on the Fairbank City Council, volunteered for Hospice and was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church and the Ladies Guild. After retiring she enjoyed traveling, playing bingo and spent many winters in Texas. She dearly loved her family, friends and flowers.

Survived by: two daughters; Bev (Larry) Jans of Norwalk and Judy (Jeff) Schutte of Readlyn, four sons; Dick (Ida) Duffy of Port Richey, FL, Tom (Connie) Duffy of Dunkerton, Jim (Dixie) Duffy of Oelwein and Mike (Teresa) Duffy of Fairbank, a brother, Cecil (Margaret) Sankey of San Angelo, TX and a daughter-in-law Dorothy Duffy of Fairbank.  She is also survived by 31 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren as well as numerous step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: her parents, her husband, two sons; Larry and Ronald Duffy, two sisters; Bernice Graff and June Sankey, two brothers; Clarence and Roger Sankey and a daughter-in-law, Sue Duffy.

Services: 10:30 am Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fairbank.

Visitation: 4:00-7:00 pm Wednesday, February 7, 2018 with a 7:00 pm Scripture Service at Woods Funeral Home, Fairbank.

Burial: Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery, Fairbank.

Memorials: to be directed to the Fairbank American Legion Veterans Park or to the family.
