Olive Gade pic Fairbank: Olive Mae Grantham Gade age 93 passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Vinton Lutheran Home in Vinton, IA. She was born on November 16, 1920 in Crookston, NE the daughter of August and Anna (Giese) Detgen. Olive married Henry Grantham, February 11, 1937 in Valentine, NE, Henry passed away September 25, 1961, she married William (Bill) Gade, May 6 ,1967 they resided in Sumner until July 1, 1972 when they moved to Fairbank, Bill passed away August 20, 2000. Olive spent the majority of her life as a homemaker and was also an avid gardener.

Survived by: One son, Russell (Lori) Grantham of De Soto, three daughters; Joyce Bratten, Marilyn (Robert) Condry both of Vinton and Barbara (Glenn) Hodgson of Dubuque, 25 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren, two daughters-in-law; Karen Grantham of Fairbank and Clarice Grantham of Harcourt.

Preceded by: Her parents, her first and second husband, two sons; Robert Grantham and Howard Grantham along with two sisters; Alice Fay and Esther Fay.

Services: 10:30 am, Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Fairbank.

Visitation: 9:30-10:30 am Saturday at the church.

Burial: Fairbank Cemetery

Memorials:  to the Fairbank Veterans Memorial Park or to the family

Earl L. Bartholomew

Earl Bartholomew picDunkerton: Earl Bartholomew age 94 passed away peacefully at his home, Monday September 15, 2014. He was born September 15, 1920 in Dunkerton, the son of Dan and Iva (Jenson) Bartholomew, he attended school in Dunkerton graduating in 1938. Earl was a veteran of World War II he was an airplane mechanic in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Earl married Irene Smith in 1941 she preceded him in death in 1980, he then married Norma Goeller in 1987 and she passed away on August 5, 2014. Earl farmed in his early years and later was a rural mail carrier retiring in 1984, he was also a bus driver for Dunkerton Community Schools and he retired from that in 1994. He was also a longtime member of the Dunkerton Volunteer Fire Department, serving as chief for a period of time. Earl was also a member of the Peter Kress Post 636 American Legion for 64 years.

Survived by: four daughters; Marcia (Rich) Young of Dubuque, Elaine Clark, Jeanette (Jim) Grady both of Waterloo and Lois Bartholomew of Burlington WI, two sons-in-law; Roger Lenz of Webster City and John Riordan of Westgate,two step-daughters; Judy (Mel) Neil of Fairbank and Cindy (Tom) Hagenow of Readlyn, one step-son Jerry Goeller (Dawn Johnson) of Fairbank, one sister-in-law; Nonnie Bartholomew of Dunkerton, 24 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and 16 step-great-grandchildren.

Preceded by: his parents, his first wife Irene and his second wife Norma, two daughters; Dee Lenz and Leta Riordan, one grandson, Casey Dangelser and one brother; Gordon Bartholomew.

Services: 10:30 am Friday, September 19, 2014 at First Baptist Church, Dunkerton.

Burial: Fairview Cemetery, Dunkerton with military rites conducted by Peter Kress Post 636 American Legion, Dunkerton.

Visitation: Thursday September 18 from 4-7 pm at Woods Funeral Home, Fairbank and for one hour before services, Friday at the church.

Memorials: In Lieu of Flowers to First Baptist Church or Peter Kress Post 636 American Legion, both of Dunkerton.

Leota L. Egan

Leota Egan picFairbank: Leota Egan age 77 passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at the Good Neighbor Society in Manchester, IA. She was born December 6, 1937 in rural Arlington, IA the daughter of Logan and Lucille (Smith) Beltz. Leota first attended country school and later went to Arlington School, she graduated from Arlington in 1955. She worked as a clerk at Jewel Tea and at Carl Mikes Grocery Store in Oelwein after that she worked at Iowa Gas and Electric as a secretary. In 1969 she married Dan Egan, they made their home in the Westgate, Oran area. Dan preceded her in death in 2007.

Survived by: a sister; Lauretta (Darwin) Jones of Arlington, along with several Nieces, Nephews and Aunts.

Preceded by: her parents, her husband, two nephews; Darrin Jones and Gary Maker

Services: 10:30 am Monday, September 15, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fairbank

Visitation: 3-6 pm Sunday, September 14 at Woods Funeral Home, Fairbank

Rosary: 3:30 pm at the Funeral Home

Scripture Service: 7:00pm at the Funeral Home

Evelyn M. Elliott picWaverly: Evelyn Elliott age 93 formerly of Fairbank, passed away on Sunday September 7, 2014 at Waverly Health Center after a brief illness. She was born November 26, 1920 in Waverly the daughter of Earl and Hazel (Clewell) Place. Evelyn married Raymond Elliott April 10, 1940 in Randalia, IA. Evelyn and Raymond spent many years of their life farming near Fairbank until retiring in the early 70’s. After retiring they spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona, Raymond passed away in 1986 and Evelyn continued to travel to Arizona each winter up until 5 years ago. Evelyn remained on the family farm until 2003 and then she moved to Waverly.

Survived by: two daughters; Sharon Fritz of Oak Brook Terrace, Illinois and Sandy Elliottt or Rosemount, Minnesota, two granddaughters; Rhonda (Rob) Antoniolli and Amy Borman, three great-granddaughters; Lauren, Olivia and Giana, two sisters; Delores (Bob) Kraai of Vancouver, Washington and Dianne (Gordon) Nagen of Waverly along with many other special family members and friends.

Preceded by: her parents, her husband and infant daughter; Karen along with two brothers; Don Place and Dr. Tom Place

Memorial Services: 11:00 am, Saturday, October 4, 2014 at United Methodist Church in Fairbank, with a luncheon and fellowship after the service.

In lieu of flowers- memorials to the United Methodist Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Emmett D. Kane

Emmett Kane picIndependence: Emmett Duane Kane age 85 passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday, August 10 at ABCM Rehabilitation Center in Independence. Emmett was born February 16, 1929 the son of John and Frances (Fettkether) Kane in rural Bremer County. he graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Fairbank. Emmett served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951-1953. After his military service he farmed in the Westgate area for a number of years, after that he worked at Ruff’s Elevator in Westgate, he then worked at Horkheimer Manufactured Homes in Hazleton doing setup and maintenance, he then worked at Modern Building Products for a period of time and most recently worked at Hazleton Housing until his retirement. Emmett married Margaret Kleitsch and they later divorced. He married Mary Jane Woods Cunningham in 1986.

Survived by: his wife: Mary Jane, four sons; Ron (Janna) Kane, Carl Kane, Dale (Erika) Kane all of Maynard and Duane (Kathy) Cunningham of Helena, MT, two daughters; Janet Dugan of Maynard and Dawn (Pat) West of Norwalk, 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren along with many special nieces and nephews.

Preceded by: his parents, one son; Gary Kane, five brothers; Louis, Harold, Jack, Ray and Paul Kane, four sisters; Beatrice McCloud, Sister Mary Eunice Kane, Peg Robinson and Sister Mary Clarice Kane.

Services: Wednesday, August 13 at 10:30 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fairbank.

Visitation: Tuesday August 12 from 4-7 pm with a 4:00 pm Rosary and a 7:00 pm Scripture service  at Woods Funeral Home in Fairbank.

Burial: Immaculate Conception Cemetery Fairbank with military rites conducted by Fortsch-Duffy Post 552 of Fairbank.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Buchanan County office.

Norma Jean Bartholomew

Norma Bartholomew picDunkerton: Norma J. Bartholomew age 93 passed away on August 5th at NorthCrest Specialty Care Center in Waterloo after a brief illness. She was born November 7, 1920 in Oelwein, IA the daughter of Albert H. and Margaret (Rogers) Heidt. She married Wendell J. Goeller on March 14, 1943, he preceded her in death in 1981. On June 6, 1987 she married Earl Bartholomew.

She graduated from Oelwein High School in 1938 She spent most of her life as a homemaker on a farm near Fairbank and also worked at City Laundry in Oelwein for a period of time.

Norma was an active lifetime member of the Fairbank United Methodist Church where she was baptized on April 19, 1946. She enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren as well as great-grandchildren, she loved to play cards, crocheting, counted cross stitching, bowling. watching game shows and visiting the casinos.

Survived by: her husband Earl, two daughters; Judy (Mel) Neil of Fairbank, Cindy (Tom) Hagenow of Readlyn, a son; Jerry (friend Dawn Johnson) Goeller of Fairbank, four step-daughters; Marcia (Rich) Young of Dubuque, Elaine Clark and Jeanette (Jim) Grady of Waterloo and Lois Bartholomew of Burlington, WI, two step-sons-in-law; Roger Lenz of Webster City and John Riordan of Westgate, eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 26 step-grandchildren and 41 step-great-grandchildren.

Preceded by: her parents, a brother and sister-in-law; Dalys J. (Hap) and Phylis Heidt a half sister and husband Anna and Bert Miller, two step-daughters; Dee Lenz and Leta Riordan and one step-grandson.

Services: Friday, August 8 @ 10:30 am at the Fairbank United Methodist Church.

Visitation: Thursday August 7 from 4-7 pm at Woods Funeral Home and for one hour before services Friday, at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Care Initiatives Hospice, Fairbank United Methodist Church or a memorial of your choice.

Library book memorials will also be available at the funeral home.

Daphine Rourke pic.Fairbank; Daphine Mary Rourke age 88 passed away Tuesday, July 22 at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, IA.

Daphine was born on July 1, 1926 in  Fairbank the daughter of Walter and Lona (Chase) Kerns. She attended school at Immaculate Conception School and graduated in 1944.

Daphine married Clement Rourke June 10, 1947 in Fairbank at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Besides raising a family Daphine worked for many years at Hinson Manufacturing in Waterloo until it closed. Later in life she worked at Little Island Childcare Center in Fairbank, first as a daycare provider and then as a cook.

Survived by; one daughter; Jeanne Rourke of Waterloo, three sons; Mike (Viv) Rourke, Mark (Diane) Rourke and Steve (Michelle) Rourke all of Fairbank, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one sister; Dorothy (Duane) Ford of Oelwein and three sisters-in-law; Ruth Kerns and Joan Rourke of Fairbank and Verna Kerns of Westgate.

Preceded by; her parents, her husband, four brothers; Harold, John, Robert and Duane Kerns and two sisters; Wilma Yeager and Catherine Weber.

Services; Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 10:30 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fairbank.

Visitation; Friday July 25 from 4-7 pm at Woods Funeral Home

Donna G. Tagtow PIC 3FAIRBANK-Donna G. Tagtow age 83 of rural Fairbank, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at the Western Home, Martin Health Center, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She was born February 17, 1931, daughter of Helmuth J and Clara H. (Brickman) Westendorf in Fayette County, Oran, Iowa.

She married Lawrence Tagtow on February 27, 1949 at the Grove Hill Lutheran Church, Bremer County, Iowa. Donna and Larry dedicated their lives to farming near Oran and Fairbank. Donna remained on the farm after Larry’s death in 1987 and continued farming operations with her son Mike until October 2010.

Survived by: one daughter, Sherry Benak of Waterloo, Iowa.  Three sons, Mike (Sandy) Tagtow of Fairbank, Iowa, Greg (Jolene) Tagtow of Waterloo, Iowa and Kelly (Angie) Tagtow of Elkhart, Iowa.  Seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  one sister, Irene Diercks of Dixon, two sisters-in-law, Lorena Westendorf of Waverly, Iowa and Esther Westendorf of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Preceeded by: her parents, her husband, Lawrence.  Four brothers, Ervin, Edwin, Lavern and Kenneth Westendorf.  One sister, Esther Westendorf.

Services: at 10:30 a.m on Monday, July 14th at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Oran, Iowa, with burial in St. Peter’s Church Cemetery, Franklin Township.

Visitation: on Sunday July 13th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Woods Funeral Home and an hour before services at the church on Monday.

Lorna Shellhorn picOran: Lorna Dorothy Schellhorn age 90 passed away Friday, June 20, 2014 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Lorna was born July 22, 1923 the daughter of John and Dorothy (Rosenow) Sell in rural Sumner, Iowa. Lorna worked as a housekeeper in private homes for several years, she then worked at Carnation in Waverly after that she worked at Wilharm’s in Tripoli. Lorna spent the majority of her working years at Wapsie Valley Schools working in foodservice, retiring in 1988 after 32 years of service. Lorna married Arnold Schellhorn on November 18, 1947 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Buck Creek.

Survived by: her husband; Arnold, two sons; Galen (Elaine) of Sumner and Alan (Jennifer) of Centennial, CO, three grandchildren; Aaron (Meg) of Memphis, TN Travis (Katie) of Independence and Anna of Centennial, CO, two great-grandchildren; Ericka and Natalee, five step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

Preceded by; her parents, one son Ronnie in infancy, one sister; Arlitha Pries and one brother-in-law; John Pries.

Services: 10:30 am on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at St. Peter”s Lutheran Church in Oran

Visitation: Monday, June 23 from 4-7 at Woods Funeral Home in Fairbank and for one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.

Memorials: in lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Richard George Bowen

Richard BowenFairbank: Richard “Dick” Bowen age 72 passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein, IA.

Richard was born March 16, 1942 in Rochester, New York, the son of Burton and Vernita (Bordenau) Bowen. Richard worked for Owens-Corning in his hometown of Albion, NY for many years until the plant closed, he was also a member of the National Guard. He married Marilyn Proctor in 1965 and they later divorced.

Survived by: two daughters; Sarah Bowen and Elizabeth Bowen, one son; Richard Bowen Jr. one sister; Nancy Patton, six grandchildren and his companion; Marilyn King of Fairbank.
